Mobile diesel generator stations for the Armenian NPP
After the Fukushima accident in 2011, the EU proposed to conduct a targeted reassessment of the safety of nuclear facilities. Thus, a program was launched to conduct stress tests in accordance with the technical specifications prepared by ENSREG (European Nuclear Safety Regulators Group) based on proposals from WENRA (Western European Nuclear Regulators Association). The EU also proposed to conduct such tests in neighboring countries. In particular, in Armenia, which has the only NPP in the region with two VVER power units.
Based on the results of the tests, a program was proposed to acquire autonomous backup power sources to improve safety. The project was directly implemented by Dalgakiran Compressor Ukraine LLC in partnership with ES GROUP EUROPE S.R.O., a member of the ENERGY SAFETY GROUP.
The production cooperation between ES GROUP EUROPE S.R.O. and Dalgakiran Compressor Ukraine LLC was chosen by the customer due to its extensive experience in the design and construction of emergency power supply systems for nuclear power plants and energy infrastructure facilities that require the highest level of performance and reliability.
According to the customer’s specifications, a complex of mobile diesel generator sets (hereinafter referred to as MDGS) was manufactured.

- The ANPP-MDGU-01 diesel power plant with a capacity of 2750 kVA (2.2 MW) is designed for an average voltage of 6 kV. It is based on a Cummins C2750 D5B diesel generator with a Cummins QSK60G22 engine (12 cylinders, 60.2 liters);
- ANPP-MDGU-02 diesel power plants with a capacity of 900 kVA (720 kW) each, designed for 380 V. They are based on a Cummins C900 D5 diesel generator with a Cummins QSK23G3 engine (6 cylinders, 23.15 liters);
- ANPP-DGU-03 diesel power plants with a capacity of 275 kVA (220 kW) each, designed for 380 V. They are based on a Cummins C275 D5e diesel generator with a Cummins QSL9G7 engine (6 cylinders, 8.8 liters);
- The ANPP-DGU-04 diesel power plant with a capacity of 110 kVA (88 kW) is designed for 380 V. It is based on a Cummins C110 D5 diesel generator with a Cummins 6BTA5.9G5 engine (6 cylinders, 5.9 liters).
All MDGSs are based on Cummins diesel generators, which are the world leader in the production of diesel power plants. The Cummins equipment meets the stringent requirements of NPPs for generators in terms of their fault tolerance, the possibility of long continuous operation and the ability to operate with overloads.
In addition to the electric starter, pneumatic starters were installed at the 900 kVA and 2750 kVA stations to improve reliability.
All MDGSs are equipped with heating, ventilation, working and emergency lighting systems, cable and connector sets.
The kit also includes additional equipment: a container for mobile cable, an 18,000-liter mobile fuel tank and a resistive load unit.
The equipment meets the requirements for seismic resistance by 9 points, which is an extremely important factor for operation in Armenia.
We also note that this is the world’s first complex of this level of mobile generators for NPPs, with safety class 4.
Today, these MDGSs are already on their way from Dalgakiran Compressor Ukraine to the Armenian NPP. In early January, the first batch of equipment was delivered and is being prepared for commissioning.
