Self-priming centrifugal pumps and their purpose

The application of self-priming pumps is very diverse – this type of unit is vital both in various industrial areas and for domestic purposes. The direct purpose of self-priming pumping equipment is to pump various water media from underground tanks, sewage wells, tanks, etc., as well as, if necessary, to pump air masses from the suction line. It should be emphasized that the design and dimensions of the pump directly depend on its maximum suction capacity.

Let’s take a closer look at the main areas in which self-priming centrifugal pumps should be used and what their purpose is:

  • chemical, mining, metallurgy, gas processing, oil refining, pulp and paper industries, water disposal and water supply: equipment flushing and cooling; smoke extraction; pumping of liquid media of varying degrees of density, viscosity, contamination and aggressiveness, including liquids containing fractional impurities, sand and other solid inclusions in suspension (water, solvents, caustic soda solution, aerosols, oil products, fuel oil, paraffin, foam, diesel fuel, gasoline, sewage, etc.);
  • construction industry: production of building materials; maintenance and repair of centralized networks and communications; pumping groundwater, wastewater and flood water, as well as liquids from pits, reservoirs, canals, technical reservoirs; firefighting; capture and pumping of toxic liquid media; water cleaning of various building surfaces, etc;
  • agriculture: all types of irrigation and watering operations; pumping fertilizers and liquid manure, as well as their subsequent spraying; pumping fruit and vegetable processing products (juices, wines, waste); supplying water and feed to livestock farms, etc;
  • Domestic use: pumping water or supplying it (swimming pools, storage tanks); providing water to autonomous water supply systems.

Design of self-priming centrifugal pumps

A self-priming centrifugal pump consists of a robust spiral casing with a fixed impeller. The impeller consists of two disks with blades between them, which are bent in the opposite direction from the direction of rotation of the impeller. The pump is connected to the suction and pressure pipelines by means of pipes of the required diameter.

The principle of operation of centrifugal self-priming pumps is as follows. As soon as the liquid medium fills the suction pipe and the pump casing, the impeller starts to rotate. The resulting centrifugal force displaces the pumped liquid from the center of the wheel to the periphery, forming a region of increased pressure, due to which the liquid is forced further from the peripheral areas into the discharge pipeline. Simultaneously with this process, the pressure in the center of the wheel decreases, which leads to the entry of liquid into the pump casing through the suction water pipe. This is how the algorithm for continuous fluid supply using a self-priming centrifugal pump works.

As a rule, the casing of this type of pump is made of stainless steel, cast iron, bronze, copper or other durable alloys, as well as modern composite polymers.

If you have set yourself the goal of buying a self-priming centrifugal pump, you should pay attention to the important fact that some models of this type of unit have more than one impeller, which is why they are called multi-stage. However, the number of wheels does not change the general principle of operation of the pumps, since the centrifugal force generated by the rotating wheel/wheels is responsible for the movement of liquid media.

Advantages of self-priming centrifugal pumps over other types of pumps

To help our customers understand the technical capabilities and advantages of self-priming centrifugal pumps, we will briefly list them:

  • simple and reliable design of the unit, which has only one moving part – the impeller;
  • high efficiency;
  • easily accessible and inexpensive repair and maintenance of self-priming pumping equipment without the involvement of third-party specialists;
  • with regular and thorough maintenance, the expected service life of this type of pump is more than 15 years;
  • the ability to operate the self-priming pump in liquid media with fractional impurities and small particles, as well as gas inclusions;
  • the possibility of placing the self-priming pump outside the volume of the pumped liquid;
  • smooth transition processes when changing operating modes;
  • No need to install complex air venting valves;
  • no need to refill the pump with liquid before starting it up;
  • the ability to continuously monitor the operation of the self-priming pump;
  • Possibility to be equipped with a diesel, gasoline or electric engine, as well as a hydraulic turbine.

Disadvantages of self-priming centrifugal pumps

Self-priming centrifugal pumps also have disadvantages that should not be overlooked:

  • limited lifting height of the liquid medium – the higher the density of the liquid, the lower the height (water – up to 9 m, oil products, as an exception – up to 12 m);
  • Strict control over the operation of the self-priming centrifugal pump during its start-up to avoid “dry” operation.

Dalgakiran exclusively represents in Ukraine centrifugal self-priming pumps made by the American manufacturer GORMAN RUPP. GR pumps have exceptional reliability and excellent performance due to the manufacturer’s extensive experience (since 1933) and specialization.
