When electricity is transmitted over long distances from power plants to end users, some losses occur, including those that depend on the resistance of the power lines, current and voltage. Since the power of electricity is the product of voltage and current, the higher the voltage in the grid, the lower the current required to transmit electricity, and the lower the losses.

In Ukraine’s energy transportation system, as in the rest of the world, electricity is transported through high-voltage power lines. However, there are no uniform global voltage standards. In Ukraine, the most common AC voltages are 220-230 V and 400 V (0.4 kV), as well as high-voltage voltages: 6, 10, 35, 110, 150, 220, 330, 400, 500, and 750 kV. Electricity with a relatively low current and high voltage is transmitted over a distance with a voltage step-down at transformer substations to 400 and 230 volts required by end consumers.

Large industrial enterprises, the metallurgical industry, and oil and gas production often use equipment that consumes current at 6.3 and 10.5 kilovolts. The power supply of such equipment is often critical and requires continuous operation. Sometimes, when it is impossible to connect to a stationary power grid, an autonomous power supply is required. To solve these problems, backup and stand-alone diesel power plants are used.
Most of the industrial diesel generators supplied to Ukraine are low-voltage (400 V), and to generate 6 and 10 kV current, enterprises and many suppliers use step-up transformers. At the same time, part of the energy generated is transformed into heat, which can negatively affect the efficiency and initial cost of generator equipment.
