Medical oxygen for hospitals

Oxygen, as a medical product, is widely used in healthcare facilities: in intensive care units, surgery, intensive care units, maternity wards, and other wards or departments where oxygen of specified parameters is required. An air mixture with a higher oxygen concentration is needed by patients in situations where part of the lungs is affected or when a person cannot breathe on their own. The issue of supplying hospitals with medical oxygen has become especially relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In general, the main source of oxygen in hospitals is oxygen concentrators or cylinders with liquid or gaseous oxygen. The disadvantages of this equipment are that the cylinders need to be refilled periodically (and there is not always time for this), and the concentrators are designed for only one bed. During peak loads on the medical system, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, this amount of oxygen is sorely lacking.

At the beginning of 2021, representatives of the Central District Hospital in Horodok, Khmelnytsky region, contacted our company with a request to manufacture a medical oxygen production station that would fully meet the needs of the medical institution.

The specialists of Dalgakiran Compressor Ukraine completed the selection and design of the necessary equipment in a short time, delivered, supervised installation and launched the oxygen station, which began producing oxygen for the hospital’s needs on April 5.

The station was installed in the technical room of the medical facility and connected to the centralized oxygen supply system. As a result, it became possible to increase the number of beds simultaneously connected to the medical oxygen supply. It is worth noting that the station can be used as both the main and backup source for the production and transportation of medical oxygen to the hospital system.

Description of the delivered oxygen station DALGAKIRAN KS-5,2/0,4 U3

The oxygen station installed in the Horodok Central District Hospital is a set of equipment that allows to produce 5.2m3 per hour of medical oxygen gas with a concentration of 93±1% and an overpressure of 0.4 MPa from the atmospheric air. It includes:

  • DALGAKIRAN TIDY 15 Compact screw compressor with built-in refrigerated compressed air dryer, air filter system and 500-liter receiver;
  • coal column;
  • main filter;
  • OXYMAT oxygen generator (Denmark) of adsorption type;
  • oxygen receiver for 320 liters.

After another successful delivery and launch of the station for Horodok Central District Hospital, Dalgakiran Compressor Ukraine has completed several more projects to provide medical oxygen to hospitals. It should be noted that from the moment the customer requests an oxygen generator to its delivery, it takes a long time to manufacture and deliver the equipment. To meet the high demand and reduce the delivery time, in mid-2021, Dalgakiran entered into an agreement with the manufacturer of oxygen generators, Ideal Makina (Turkey), and became the exclusive representative in Ukraine for the supply and maintenance of oxygen generators from the Turkish manufacturer. The first jointly produced oxygen stations have already been successfully launched in hospitals in Cherkasy, Rivne and Donetsk regions.

Ideal Makina is a leader in Turkey in the production and supply of gaseous oxygen and nitrogen generators. It has all the necessary certifications for the use of oxygen in medicine: ISO 13485:2016, ISO 7396-1:2016, Medical Device Directive 93/42/EEC. The production of medical oxygen is carried out in accordance with the standards of the European Pharmacopoeia.

The principle of operation of a standard oxygen station

Ambient air from the environment is purified and compressed by a screw compressor to 7 bar. A refrigerated dryer and air filters remove moisture and mechanical impurities from the compressed air. The air then enters a coal column, where it is cleaned of oil residues. The main filter removes coal dust, and clean and dry compressed air enters the receiver, which is used to accumulate it, equalize pressure and reduce pulsations. From the receiver, the prepared air is transported to the oxygen generator, where gas separation takes place – the separation of oxygen from other gases contained in the atmospheric air using the SCA (short-cycle non-heat adsorption) technology. The product oxygen is accumulated in the receiver after the generator. The oxygen generator is equipped with an automated control system and a gas analyzer that controls the set purity of the oxygen produced. After passing through an additional antibacterial filter, medical oxygen is supplied to the hospital’s distribution system and gets to the patients.
