IMPLEMENTATION OF ENERGY SAVING MEASURES TO REDUCE ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND OPERATING COSTS AT KAMET-STEEL PJSC IN THE TECHNOLOGICAL PROCESS OF BLAST FURNACE GAS INJECTION AT GPS-6

Dnipro-based KAMETSTAL, a part of Metinvest Holding, has successfully implemented another investment project to modernize the production equipment of the gas shop at PJSC KAMET STAL aimed at saving energy. The modernization program was carried out within the framework of the plant’s cooperation with YASNO and with the participation of DALGAKIRAN. One of the main goals of the modernization is to save electricity by expanding the range of gas blower performance control without technological losses during the transportation of blast furnace gas to the enterprise’s consumer shops.

Blast furnace gas is used for metallurgical production processes to provide heat and generate steam for the plant’s steelmaking operations. The long length of the pipelines and the volume of gas transported require high capacity gas blowers. At the same time, gas production and consumption at the plant fluctuates throughout the day. Consequently, the operation of GDMs without power control leads to excessive electricity consumption.

Based on the results of the tender and in accordance with the concluded contract, the specialists of Dalgakiran Compressor Ukraine performed a full range of turnkey works on the selection, supply, installation and commissioning of a blast furnace gas injection system based on a centrifugal blower manufactured by HOWDEN, Germany, with the installation of a frequency converter manufactured by Hiconics. The supplied blower together with the FC is able to provide transportation of blast furnace gas in the capacity range from 5 to 50 thousand m3/h with a pressure difference of up to 1,200 mmHg.

To ensure maximum energy efficiency, DALGAKIRAN specialists have implemented a hybrid control system for the blowers using a VFD and a guide apparatus, which ensures smooth control while meeting the requirements of the customer’s process in terms of blast furnace gas productivity and pressure, eliminating outdated bypass control methods.

As a result of the modernization, electricity savings are more than 10,000 kWh per day, compared to electricity consumption before the modernization. This solution makes it possible to optimize the company’s gas balance and significantly increases the company’s competitiveness in the global market, reducing production costs.

The project’s chief engineer is Oleksandr Rodkin.
