Shell and tube evaporators
The evaporator has a simple design, but without this unit, the liquid will not be cooled.
An evaporator is a heat exchanger in which heat energy is exchanged between a liquid and gas vapor. The physical principle of heat transfer takes place: from a more heated body to a colder one.
Structurally, a shell-and-tube evaporator consists of a tube shell with tube bundles in it. Freon gases boil in the tube bundles, and these tube bundles are washed by liquid, thereby cooling.
The modern shell-and-tube evaporator did not stop at this simple design:
the pipe in the bundle has wound fins – this is done to increase the heat exchange area, which in turn makes it possible to reduce the size of the heat exchanger itself. Also, the ribbed surface of the pipe creates a turbulent flow, which increases the efficiency of heat transfer.
When buying a vaporizer, the first thing you should know is this:
- compressor cooling capacity,
- gas performance,
- gas grade,
- boiling and condensation temperatures, and, of course, it is important to know the dimensions of the evaporator in order to place it in place of the failed one,
- inlet/outlet temperature of the liquid (coolant),
- coolant consumption.
Given that shell-and-tube heat exchangers are collapsible and not as sensitive to dirty water, and can always be disassembled and cleaned, preliminary mechanical filtration of the liquid before it enters the evaporator remains an important factor. The cleaner the liquid, the longer the life of your vaporizer will be. It is also very important that the liquid should not contain acids, alkalis, which can enter into chemical reactions with copper, steel, which again can lead to vaporizer failure.
After installing or replacing a new evaporator, it must be insulated to improve the efficiency of heat exchange from the effects of ambient temperature.
If you have already decided on all the technical parameters of the heat exchanger and only need to choose a brand, what you should pay attention to is, of course, price and quality.
There are quite a few shell-and-tube evaporators on the market, but the low cost of such heat exchangers is most often achieved through the use of low-quality steels and soft thin-walled copper pipes in the production. This can lead to the need to replace the heat exchanger again in the next one and a half to two years, while the service life of high-quality heat exchangers is 10-15 years. Also, do not forget that if the heat exchanger fails, there is a very high probability of destroying the compressor, which is incomparably more expensive than the evaporator itself in terms of capital expenditures. That is why it is very important to choose a manufacturer that has been producing such heat exchangers, including refrigeration machines, for decades. By purchasing such a heat exchanger, you will be sure of the perfect quality and long service life of the refrigeration machine as a whole.
