Energy efficient solutions for industrial enterprises

The energy sector in Ukraine is going through a difficult time, and this is reflected not only in the everyday life of citizens, but also in the work of industrial enterprises. Their owners are constantly facing a number of challenges, such as rising energy prices, global environmental problems, etc. (both of which, unfortunately, are not changing).

However, all these problems can be solved by implementing energy-efficient systems that allow

Given the fact that the main energy carriers used in industry (water, electricity, fuels of all kinds) have risen significantly in price and the requirements for environmental performance of products have increased, every production facility that wants to remain competitive in the market is striving to introduce energy-efficient equipment.

First of all, a production line modernization plan is drawn up, according to which it is possible to determine which machinery will be replaced with new equipment. In the course of the enterprise’s operation, some equipment changes urgently, so you should not buy a new analog as part of a planned modernization.

For example, if we look at automotive production, it should be noted that this is a sector that always requires large energy costs. The machinery in modern production is being replaced by new conveyors that consume much less energy to operate, while productivity increases.

It is also important to pay attention to the lighting of the premises and surrounding areas, where modern LED lamps are installed instead of old incandescent ones. They consume significantly less energy.

This is just one example of how energy-efficient equipment can be implemented in production. Each case will have its own examples, opportunities, and specific actions.

Use of renewable energy sources

The most well-known and effective method of energy saving is renewable energy. These include:

2. Wind generation.
3. Hydropower.

The use of such sources in the enterprise has a number of advantages, which we will consider in more detail:

• Savings. Taking a long-term view, renewable energy sources contribute to financial benefits. Yes, high installation costs are unavoidable, but subsequent operation and maintenance costs are much lower.
• Renewable sources help reduce carbon dioxide and other harmful substances.
• Energy independence. Constant shelling of energy infrastructure, long-term power outages, and the trend of rising energy prices are all factors that make Ukrainian entrepreneurs skeptical about energy security and switch to independent sources, including renewable energy.

Long-term financial benefits, environmental concerns, and personal energy security are the three main reasons why you should consider switching to renewable energy sources.

Automation and digitalization of production processes

Digitalization and automation of production processes can be used in conjunction with renewable energy sources to save energy. For example, if there is no need for equipment to run around the clock, consuming unnecessary kilowatts, digital computer systems can be installed to allow equipment to be turned on only when it is required by the production process.

Also, many operations in the food, chemical, retail, and other industries can be automated. This means that there is no need to hire additional employees to perform certain tasks. On the one hand, this leads to job losses, but this approach is much more profitable: installing robots on some production lines does not involve wage costs, taxes, social contributions, etc.

Energy saving measures in buildings

As for private households or apartment buildings, various energy-efficient solutions are also available for them. For example, in order to better keep your home warm in the winter (and thus spend less on heating), there are programs for insulating buildings. In this case, the city can cover part of the costs, and the rest will be collected by homeowners.

Replacing obsolete and physically worn-out heating lines, water pipes, and electrical wiring is also part of energy-saving measures in buildings.

Energy audit and energy efficiency management

Given that energy prices are rising globally and there is a need to preserve the environment and decarbonize production, energy audits are regularly conducted. Its purpose is to check the capabilities of a particular production facility to produce competitive products at the lowest possible energy cost. This work requires specialists to have specialized knowledge that allows them to accurately identify equipment that does not meet modern standards (in particular, to identify production lines that urgently need to be modernized).

Large companies are also setting up departments to manage energy efficiency. One well-known strategy is to rent diesel generators.

Attracting financial instruments and government support

Many companies are unable to modernize their production facilities and purchase new equipment on their own to meet global standards and implement energy-saving technologies. To solve this pressing issue, they need to attract various financial instruments (loans, private investments, etc.) and receive assistance from the government. The latter includes various programs to help small, large and medium-sized businesses. They are successfully used by entrepreneurs not only in Ukraine but also in other countries. It is fast, profitable, and effective.

Only in tandem can these tools really improve the situation in many industries and make Ukrainian products competitive not only on the domestic but also on the foreign market.

Staff training and professional development

Neither modernization, nor investment, nor automation will be effective without highly qualified and trained personnel. It is not enough to simply install energy-saving technologies if a person, as the main resource of production, cannot manage them.

It is extremely important to recruit people on the labor market who know how to maintain modern plants, machines, and other equipment. Another option is to organize special training courses for employees who have been working at your company for a long time.

Thus, the introduction of modern equipment and technologies cannot exist without trained and knowledgeable personnel. Only in this combination will a company succeed in the market.
