Centrifugal slurry pumps and their purpose

Slurry (mud) centrifugal pumps are designed for use in difficult technical conditions and are used to pump water media with a high content of impurities and foreign inclusions – particles of soil, sand, ore, slag, ash, gravel, etc.

Centrifugal slurry pumps are used to pump industrial waste, sewage, household waste, hydraulic mixtures containing abrasive inclusions, contaminated wastewater, flushing water used in the process of drilling wells, waste from alumina refineries, and many others. The areas of application for this type of unit are extremely wide, the main ones being:

  • cleaning of water supply and sewage systems;
  • industrial cleaning and preparation of land cavities for laying pipelines and other communications;
  • pumping sand from the bottom of water bodies;
  • cleaning of pools, lakes, reservoirs, rivers, port areas, industrial lagoons and pits, and wells from debris and silt;
  • pumping of production waste at mines and ore mines;
  • unloading of tankers, barges, and industrial tanks with technical solutions.

It should be remembered that for pumping liquid media containing a large amount of impurities, it is necessary to buy a slurry centrifugal pump equipped with agitators. This type of unit avoids clogging of the pump inlet due to impurities settling to the bottom.

Design of slurry centrifugal pumps

In order for the slurry centrifugal pump to effectively pass fractional impurities and foreign inclusions, its casing and blades are made of high-chromium steel or cast iron. The design of this type of pumping equipment, due to its extreme simplicity and the absence of a large number of parts, is characterized by a high degree of reliability and durability, it consists of the following key components: a spiral casing with a suction nozzle and a reverse intake valve; a wheel/wheels with blades located on the shaft; bearings rotating the shaft; a large rotor; an engine with a thin-walled starter; a cooling casing; a sealing clutch; a mixer.

The principle of operation of the slurry centrifugal pump is based on the use of centrifugal forces arising from the impact of the blades of the main functional wheel of the device on the moving liquid medium.

Four main factors affect the efficiency and reliability of a slurry pump: mandatory cooling of the unit, its tightness, wear resistance and efficiency. The specific power of the motor directly depends on its temperature – the lower the temperature, the higher the power. Maximum engine tightness is achieved with the help of gaskets and seals that protect moving parts from aggressive water environments and, as a result, from clogging and premature wear. Efficiency is affected by the degree of wear and tear of such pump elements as the casing, shaft wheel, discharge pipe, etc. The degree of wear and tear depends on the quality of the materials from which the equipment is made, as well as on the speed and type of fluid.

Disadvantages of slurry centrifugal pumps

As with all types of pumping equipment, slurry pumps have their own permissible operating parameters and limitations that should be taken into account when purchasing this type of pumping equipment (the limit figures may vary depending on the design of a particular model of the unit):

  1. The content of impurities and foreign matter should not exceed 70% of the total weight of the pumped liquid.
  2. The temperature range of the pumped liquid medium varies from +5 °C to +60 °C.
  3. The density of the pumped liquid medium should not exceed 2500 kg/m³.
  4. The size of foreign inclusions in the pumped liquid should not exceed 12 mm.
