Cam pump design

Rotary (cam) pumps are volumetric units in which the liquid working medium is displaced by the synchronous rotation of a pair of cam rotors that do not touch each other, placed in a durable, profiled casing. As the rotors rotate, the pumped liquid successively fills the space between them and the pump casing and is then thrown towards the discharge port. A continuous and efficient flow of the pumped medium is created by the clearance between the rotors and the casing.

Modern manufacturers of pumping equipment offer several variants of rotors for cam pumps – multi-lobe, three-lobe, two-lobe and single – each of which is designed to perform its functions in accordance with the technical requirements and standards for the transportation of a particular working medium.

The choice of cam-type pumping equipment requires a careful study of not only its advantages, but also some limitations and features, the main ones being:

• lack of ability to pump abrasive working media;
• relatively low self-priming ability;
• direct dependence of efficiency on the viscosity of the working medium.
