Purpose and features of piston metering pumps

Piston (dosing) pumping equipment is widely used in many industrial areas and spheres, in which it is operated, as a rule, as dosing units. The ability to use metering pumps for pumping all kinds of liquid media, including abrasive, toxic, radioactive, corrosive, explosive, flammable, volatile, containing solid and gas inclusions, makes them practically indispensable where the operation of other types of pumps is impossible due to their design or principle of operation. The main applications for this type of pump are listed below:

  • Chemical industry: dosing, mixing, injection, dissolution of various chemical compositions, including aggressive, toxic, abrasive, etc;
  • oil production and refining industry: dosing, mixing additives and additional mixtures (flocculants, anti-corrosion additives, oxygen scavengers, foam suppressants, anti-scaling agents, surfactants) in diesel fuel, gasoline, fuel oil, etc.; injection of glycol/methanol into oil wellheads; dosing, injection and supply of reagents during oil production and transportation;
  • food industry: dosing, mixing, supply of flavoring and food additives, dyes, preservatives, fats, enzymes, food acids, essences, vegetable and fruit purees, sauces, syrups, liquid concentrates, etc.; supply of liquid mixtures for sterilization of food containers;
  • ceramic industry: dosing and supply of liquid clay to spray-drying equipment; dosing of enamels and paints for ceramics, etc;
  • textile industry: dosing and supply of bleaching liquids; mixing, dosing and supply of dyeing liquid formulations;
  • Pharmaceutical industry: dosing, mixing and supply of filter additives (e.g. diatomaceous earth solution), caustic soda (to create an alkaline environment), concentrated sulfuric acid (to create an acidic environment), other individual components and finished liquid dosage forms, including tinctures, syrups, suspensions, concentrates, etc;
  • cosmetics and perfumery industry: dosing, supply of both individual cosmetic components (extracts, oils, herbal and chemical additives, preservatives, dyes, fixatives) and finished products in packaging;
  • water treatment systems and facilities: dosing and supply of liquid chemical compositions intended for purification and conditioning of drinking and industrial water, sports pools, wastewater, etc. (chlorine dioxide, ferrous sulfate, sodium hypochlorite, silicic acid, hydrogen chloride, lime, sodium bisulfate, polymers, coagulants, algaecides, etc.);
  • desalination systems and facilities: dosing and supply of sodium sulfite, foam suppressants, acid washers for multi-cascade evaporators, ferrous sulfate, anti-scale, etc;
  • Thermal power plants, hydroelectric power plants, steam generators: dosing and supply of chemical compositions for the treatment of water (phosphates, ammonia, hydrazines);
  • gas production industry: dehydration and purification of natural gas;
  • machine-building industry;
  • steel industry;
  • paper industry.

Design of piston pumps

Reciprocating (dosing) pumps are used not only as independent units, but also as an integral part of automatic dosing systems, which are completed with modular units that include the reciprocating pump itself, a support frame, a mixing tank, control and measuring equipment, liquid storage tanks, and a system control panel.

The design and principle of operation of a reciprocating pump is as simple as that of the vast majority of other pumping equipment. It consists of a cylindrical working chamber with pressure and suction ports. Inside the chamber is a piston that makes reciprocating movements. The transformation of rotational motion into reciprocating motion is provided by the crank mechanism, which is equipped with the pump design. The process of liquid suction in a reciprocating pump occurs due to the creation of low pressure in the working chamber during the movement of the piston to the right with the discharge valve closed, and the pressure of the liquid opens the suction valve and the working chamber is completely filled. When the piston reverses, a higher pressure is created in the cylinder than in the discharge port, which causes the suction valve to close and the discharge valve to open to allow the liquid medium to flow. This ensures the process of injection or displacement of a liquid equal to the volume of the working chamber into the pressure manifold of the pipeline.

The main advantages of piston pumps:

  • high efficiency;
  • high absorption capacity;
  • easy and quick replacement of worn parts;
  • the ability to drive piston pumps from engines of any type;
  • the ability to supply small volumes of liquid under high pressure (independence of pressure and flow);
  • the ability to create high pressures at minimal cost;
  • the ability to dose, inject and supply a wide range of liquid media with different temperature, viscosity, toxicity, etc;
  • start-up of the piston unit without preliminary filling of the suction pipe and the working cylinder.

If you are faced with the task of buying a piston (metering) pump, pay attention to the following features of this type of pumping equipment:

  • uneven supply of liquid media (pulsation), the presence of vibrations during operation;
  • relatively low performance indicators;
  • the inability to connect several piston units in a single chain in series due to high inlet pressures;
  • inability to pump liquids containing solid abrasive particles.
