Purpose of peristaltic pumps
A peristaltic (hose) pump is a self-priming unit equipped with a hose, which is used to pump various liquid media with a wide temperature range, high density and viscosity, as well as liquids containing fibers, dirt, lumps, sand and other foreign inclusions.
Peristaltic pumping equipment has many advantages and is therefore widely used in many industrial areas, the most common of which are:
- food industry: pumping ready-made pastes including solid mixtures, jam and jam, vegetable and fruit pomace, caramel, condensed mixtures, dough, food concentrates, etc;
- Chemical industry: pumping alkaline and acid mixtures, chalk solutions, aluminum alum solutions, liquid media with suspended particles, oils, detergent and cleaning solutions, chemical solvents, lubricants, etc;
- Medicine: ensuring blood circulation without compromising the integrity of its parameters, surgical interventions, transplantation;
- pharmaceutical industry: pumping of dosage forms of various viscosities, pharmaceutical waste, etc;
- agriculture: pumping of technological precipitation, minced meat, dairy and alcoholic products, pulp, animal blood, agricultural waste, vegetable pulp, etc;
- Construction industry: pumping construction mixtures and solutions, such as cement, concrete, clay, slurries, paints, varnishes, emulsions, adhesives, extraction solutions, contaminated liquid media, sludge, etc;
- nuclear power: pumping of radioactive waste;
- cosmetics industry: pumping shampoos, creams, balms, emulsions and other cosmetic products.
Design of peristaltic pumps
Let’s take a closer look at the design of this unit, which is a positive displacement pump in which the movement of liquid media occurs due to peristaltic pushing through a tube (elastic hose), i.e. the flow part of the pump. The peristalsis process is provided by mechanical pressure on the tube. Due to its simple design, peristaltic pumping equipment does not have valves or spools, and the working hose is alternately squeezed by two or more rollers located on different sides of the rotor, due to which the liquid is pumped. The suction process is activated by the vacuum that occurs when the liquid medium returns.

If you need to buy a peristaltic pump, you should remember that the pumped liquids are in contact exclusively with the inner surfaces of the tube, which is made of high-strength elastomer, which completely eliminates the risk of damage to the surface mechanisms of the unit.
Today, there are two main types of peristaltic pumping equipment on the market: hose and tube, which differ from each other by their flow elements, i.e. tubes or hoses, as their names suggest. Hose units are designed to move medium and large volumes of contaminated liquid media with a high percentage of solid inclusions, sludge, and crystallization products. They are multilayer, made of rubber and reinforced with special inserts.
Tubing for tube peristaltic pumps is made of modern polymers and is characterized by high strength, chemical resistance and reliable tightness. Due to the fact that the composition of polymers in a particular model of the unit is passive in relation to various pumped media, tube pumps are successfully used in the pharmaceutical and food industries.
Advantages of peristaltic pumps over other types of pumps
Peristaltic pumping equipment has many advantages over other types of pumps, namely:
- Easy and inexpensive installation, operation, maintenance and repair;
- no risk of contamination of the pumped liquids due to the high degree of tightness of the pump, as well as the possibility of pumping poisonous, explosive, radioactive media and media with destructive or gaseous inclusions;
- no destructive impact of the peristaltic pump on the environment and vice versa;
- The tubular element is the only wearing part that takes several minutes to replace, resulting in minimal downtime;
- the ability to operate the peristaltic pump in reverse mode;
- low noise level during operation;
- uniformity, accuracy and smoothness of liquid supply;
- the self-priming ability of the peristaltic pump, and as a result, the ability to pump liquid from a depth of 9 meters or more;
- the ability to operate the unit without preliminary filling with liquid, i.e. dry;
- the ability to change the direction of movement of the medium by running the rotor in the opposite direction;
- the ability to draw liquids from horizontal surfaces;
- the possibility of maintenance without stopping its operation (mandatory maintenance – every 250-3000 hours of operation, depending on the type of pumped substance);
- lack of direct connection between the pumping and the drive, as a result of which water cannot enter the drive.
Disadvantages of peristaltic pumps:
- temperature and pressure limitations in the pump’s operating mode associated with the materials from which peristaltic pumps are made (up to 90 °C, up to 7-16 bar);
- restrictions in the choice of materials for the manufacture of this type of unit due to the maximum permissible temperature and pressure, which in turn limits the application areas of peristaltic pumps;
- elastic elements require constant monitoring of their technical condition.
