Periodic maintenance of generators is necessary to increase their maintenance-free period of operation, trouble-free start-up and stable operation during backup and autonomous power supply.

If a diesel generator is used as a backup power source, its timely start-up and operation in any weather and production conditions is the key to the stable functioning of the organization: production, trade, telecommunications equipment and office equipment, building life support systems and burglar alarms. If the power plant is used for autonomous power supply, then timely maintenance will minimize the risk of a complete blackout at the facility where the generator is operated.

Diesel generators are serviced according to the criteria of the manufacturer of this equipment – by the engine hours produced or after a certain service life. Scheduled maintenance includes:

  • replacement of consumables and parts of the power plant – coolant, oil, filters, spark plugs, drive belts, etc.
  • inspection, checking the fastening of various components, cleaning dirt and dust, where necessary
  • performing diagnostic work (insulation resistance of circuits, voltage testing, etc.)

The quality of equipment maintenance depends primarily on the following factors:

  • availability of high-quality diagnostic equipment, consumables and original spare parts
  • qualifications of service personnel

    • Extensive experience. Dalgakiran Compressor Ukraine is a leader in the Ukrainian market for the supply of industrial diesel power plants, providing their warranty and post-warranty service. Since 2005, a large number of contracts have been concluded for comprehensive maintenance of generator equipment for organizations of various profiles, including gas station chains, large mobile operators, banks, data centers, and government agencies.
    • Use of high-quality consumables and original spare parts, availability of a constantly maintained warehouse of components.
    • Availability of modern diagnostic (including software) and repair equipment.
    • We carry out repairs of any complexity directly at the power plant installation site throughout Ukraine. In some cases (e.g., for a major overhaul of a unit), we take the generator to the Service Center in Kyiv or to the nearest Service Center. The company’s branches with warehouses of original spare parts and mobile service teams are located in the largest cities: Kyiv, Dnipro (Dnipropetrovs’k), Kharkiv, Odesa, Lviv, Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, Kryvyi Rih, Horishni Plavni (Komsomolsk).
    • Possibility to perform urgent repairs – if necessary, we send a repair team on the day of receipt of the application.
    • Comprehensive equipment maintenance with the signing of a contract. An integrated approach allows you to maximize the maintenance-free service life, as the necessary amount of preventive maintenance is performed during any repair.
  • We provide warranty for all our works.
  • Competitive prices. When concluding a contract for the comprehensive maintenance of a fleet of diesel generators, prices for all types of services are discussed individually with each client.

If you are about to expire the warranty period for such equipment, we suggest that you switch to us for post-warranty service to take advantage of all the benefits described above.

The most common malfunctions of diesel generators

When do you need to repair a diesel generator?

  1. The equipment does not turn on.
  2. The generator overheats quickly.
  3. Low lubricant level, leakage.
  4. Periodic voltage drop.
  5. Problems with the fuel system.
  6. Problems with electricity.
  7. Other damage and problems.

If you notice these or other malfunctions, we recommend that you contact our specialists.

Why timely maintenance of the generator is important

To avoid malfunctions and problems with the generator, always maintain it on time – keep an eye on the oil level, fill it with high-quality fuel, and operate it carefully. These simple rules will ensure stable and productive operation of the equipment for many years. If your device does break down, our specialists are ready to offer you high-quality diesel generator repair anywhere in Ukraine.

Frequently asked questions about maintenance and repair of diesel generators

  • Important! Choosing the correct operating mode for a DGS

Before starting operation, you must determine the unit’s operating mode — the permissible power, operating duration, and maintenance intervals depend on this. According to ISO 8528, manufacturers classify operating modes as follows: ESP — emergency backup power; PRP — primary power source capable of long-term operation under variable loads; LTP — operation for a limited number of hours; and COP — long-term continuous operation under a constant load. The power rating specified for ESP does not mean that the unit can be operated under such a load continuously — improper use accelerates wear and shortens maintenance intervals. If you are unsure which operating mode your DGS is designed for, check with your supplier or service center before drawing up a maintenance schedule.

  • When does a diesel generator require maintenance?

Maintenance is performed based on operating hours (typically 250, 500, or 1,000 hours, depending on the model) or on a calendar schedule — whichever comes first. Standby DGS with low operating hours are maintained strictly according to the calendar schedule. For new or overhauled equipment, the manufacturer may specify a separate initial maintenance interval, and in harsh conditions — such as dusty environments, extreme temperatures, or high loads — these intervals are shortened. After a prolonged period of inactivity, it is advisable to conduct an inspection, check the fluids and battery, and perform a test run.

  • What does scheduled maintenance for a diesel generator include?

Scheduled maintenance includes checking the fuel, oil, and cooling systems for leaks; changing the oil and filters; and inspecting fluids, hoses, and belts. The starting system and electrical equipment (starter, rechargeable battery, charging generator), the power system (cables, insulation, circuit breaker, grounding), and the control system — sensors, emergency stop, and auto-start — are checked separately. The maintenance is completed with a test run to monitor key parameters and, if possible, a load test. After the work is completed, a report is drawn up documenting the operating hours and any defects found.

  • In what cases is diesel generator service required?

In addition to scheduled maintenance, you should contact a service provider if you see warning signals or error codes on the controller, experience starting problems, unstable RPM, unusual noises, or vibrations. Signs include a drop in power, abnormal oil temperature or pressure, unstable voltage or frequency, battery problems, a change in exhaust gas color, fluid leaks, or overheating cables. Service is also required after an emergency shutdown, after a prolonged period of inactivity, and before a season of increased load.

  • What consumables are replaced during diesel generator maintenance?

During scheduled maintenance, engine oil, the oil filter, fuel filter, and air filter are typically replaced. According to a separate schedule, coolant, belts, hoses, and the thermostat are also replaced. Based on diagnostic results, batteries, seals, and other worn components may be replaced. The exact list is determined by the maintenance schedule for the specific model and the results of the inspection.

  • How often should a generator be serviced?

The frequency depends on operating hours, calendar time, and operating conditions — the “whichever comes first” principle applies. For prime power generators, maintenance is based on operating hours; for standby generators, it is primarily based on calendar time, since oil, fuel, and other components degrade regardless of operating hours. A standby unit should be periodically started under load and its key parameters checked. Maintenance intervals are shortened in dusty conditions, extreme temperatures, frequent starts, or when using low-quality fuel.

  • How does timely service of a diesel generator affect the stable operation of a business?

Regular diagnostics detect wear and tear or loose connections before they lead to an emergency shutdown. Checking the battery, charger, and automatic controls is also important — these are the components most often responsible for the generator failing to start or take on the load when the main power grid goes down. A properly functioning engine and control system maintain stable voltage and frequency without fluctuations. Scheduled maintenance allows work to be carried out in advance, at a convenient time, rather than as an emergency in the middle of a production shutdown — and it preserves the engine’s service life and saves fuel. For a backup system, it all comes down to one thing: it must start up and take the load exactly when it is critically needed.
