The hybrid inverter has emerged as just such a versatile solution — the most advanced and popular type of inverter on the market today. What is a hybrid inverter?

A hybrid inverter provides bidirectional energy conversion. It converts direct current (DC) from renewable sources and batteries into alternating current (AC) for domestic consumption or export to the mains grid, and is also capable of drawing electricity from the grid to efficiently charge the battery bank.

Today, the decision to purchase a hybrid inverter is made both by those building a fully-fledged off-grid system and by those who simply need a powerful and ‘smart’ uninterruptible power supply (UPS) in the event of prolonged power cuts. The main advantage of this device is the ability to scale the system at any time.

How hybrid inverters work

The entire operation of a hybrid system is based on the logic of ‘smart priorities’. The device constantly analyses where it is currently more cost-effective and safer to draw electricity from, and does so entirely automatically.

In normal operation, when the mains supply is stable and external alternative sources are connected to the system, the hybrid solar inverter first and foremost directs the free electricity generated on-site to domestic appliances. If more energy is generated than the home requires, the surplus is used to charge the batteries so that they are always 100 per cent full. If, however, the batteries are already fully charged and generation still exceeds consumption, the smart device can feed (sell) this surplus back into the grid. When evening falls or external generation drops, the device begins to gradually ‘blend in’ electricity from the mains supply.

However, the most interesting thing happens during a power cut or blackout. As soon as the mains voltage drops to zero, the home hybrid inverter switches all critical appliances to battery power within a matter of milliseconds (usually within 10–20 ms). This transition occurs so quickly that computers do not reboot, and the sensitive circuit boards in gas boilers do not trigger any errors. The home continues to function as normal, completely isolated from the problematic external grid.

Advantages of using hybrid inverters

The popularity of hybrid architecture is entirely justified, as it meets absolutely all of the user’s energy security needs. In particular:

• Complete energy independence. You get a reliable ‘all-in-one’ system that protects against short-term voltage surges, scheduled power restrictions and prolonged emergency blackouts.
• Flexible cost management. Thanks to the programming function, you can configure the device to operate on the night-time tariff. It will store cheap energy from the grid at night, and during peak daytime hours, when the highest tariff applies, it will power your home from the batteries.
• Hybrid mode (Smart Grid). Unlike conventional UPSs, which operate on an ‘either mains or battery’ principle, the hybrid unit can combine power sources. For example, if your business (office, restaurant or garage) consumes 30 kW, but the allocated power from the electricity supplier under your contract is only 15 kW, the inverter will draw 15 kW from the grid and supplement this with a further 15 kW from the battery or solar panels, without tripping the input circuit breakers and protecting your equipment from shutdown during peak loads.

What’s more, this is the ideal option for phased investment. You can start by purchasing just the unit and the battery as an uninterruptible power supply system, and then, in a year or two, connect solar panels to it without having to replace the basic equipment.
