Such units operate by using the heat of water vapor (about 200 ºC), hot water (over 80 ºC) or by burning process gases (natural, liquefied petroleum gas), and therefore are widely used in industrial facilities where there is a free or inexpensive source of thermal energy. The principle of operation of the absorption chiller

Water is used as a refrigerant in absorption chillers. It is absorbed and transferred by the absorber from the absorber to the generator. There, the liquid evaporates and enters the condenser, where it transfers its heat to the water in the cooling circuit. Then the cooled water enters the evaporator, where it boils at relatively low temperatures due to the creation of a vacuum. As the water boils, it takes heat from the cooled circuit. The water is then pumped to the absorber by pumps and the cycle repeats.

Types of absorption chillers

Depending on the number of generator sections in which the absorbent solution is heated and evaporated, single- and double-circuit machines are distinguished. In addition, chillers are also divided into categories depending on the heat source used:

• Direct heating – refrigeration machines that use natural or liquefied gas or diesel fuel as a heat source. They are characterized by compact size and high performance;
• Steam heating – units that use heated low-pressure steam as an energy source;
• Water-heated machines – machines that run on hot water.

Steam and water heating units are mainly installed and operated at enterprises where a lot of excess heat is generated as a result of technological processes.

Absorption chillers are energy-efficient and therefore cost-effective refrigeration machines. Especially when used in industrial enterprises where there is a lot of excess heat generated as a result of technological processes. Important advantages of absorption type equipment are:

• Environmental safety. The machines use ordinary water as a refrigerant, not aggressive chemical compounds. The substances used as absorbents are also environmentally friendly;
• Energy efficiency. The unit is powered mainly by secondary energy sources. Electricity is consumed only for the operation of pumps and automation, which is several dozen times less than with similarly powered compression chillers.
• Cost-effectiveness. Operating absorption chillers is significantly cheaper than using other refrigeration machines. In addition, even at times of peak load, they do not cause overloading of power grids. However, when choosing equipment, it is worth considering the higher price of absorption chillers compared to classic compressor refrigeration units;
• Compact size. Machines of this type are characterized by small dimensions, which allows them to be installed and operated even in small rooms with a lack of space and free surfaces;
• Durability. Absorption chillers have virtually no moving parts in their design. This not only reduces wear and tear and increases the service life – more than 20 years on average – but also minimizes noise and vibration;
• Easy operation. The units are controlled by automation, which ensures fine-tuning and uninterrupted operation of the chiller in all operating conditions.
• One of the most important advantages of absorption-type refrigeration units is the low cost of the produced cold, which makes these machines suitable for use in large industrial enterprises without significantly increasing their costs.
