The HIVERT-Y/T common medium voltage frequency converter is a high-voltage (synchronous and asynchronous) AC motor speed control device developed by Hiconics. The device converts direct current to alternating current, and the output three-electrode insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) provides a stable current voltage to power the motor.

Technical characteristics

The HIVERT-Y/T variable frequency drive (VFD) controls an electric motor by changing the frequency and voltage of the power supply. It also has the ability to control the acceleration and deceleration of the motor while it is starting or stopping. These two functions make the VFD a powerful controller for controlling AC motors.

The HIVERT-Y/T unit consists of several power cells in series connected in phase. Each power cell is provided with an independent phase-shifted power supply isolation transformer. The unit is based on four key elements:

  1. Rectifier, or DC bridge. This is the first stage of a variable frequency drive where the AC power from the mains is converted into DC power.
  2. DC bus. The DC current from the rectifier is fed to the bus, which consists of capacitors and inductors to smooth out the ripple and store the DC energy. The main function of the DC bus is to receive, store, and deliver DC energy.
  3. Inverter. Consists of electronic switches such as IGBT transistors and thyristors. It receives energy from the DC bus and converts it into alternating current of the required frequency, amplitude and shape, which is supplied to the motor. The inverter power cell receives signals through an optical fiber and uses pulse width modulation technology to change the output frequency and control the speed of the induction motor.
  4. Digital signal processor (DSP). It consists of a microprocessor unit and performs various functions such as control, setting drive parameters, and analyzing the fault status of the unit’s operating components. It receives a feedback signal from the motor as a setpoint for the current speed and adjusts the voltage to current frequency ratio to control the motor speed more precisely.

As an option, the HIVERT-Y/T is equipped with a servo control system with an optical cable and a cooling system based on a powerful fan from the German company EBM.

How it works

The mains power supply is fed to the rectifier circuit of the HIVERT-Y/T, which converts the AC power to DC power. The pulsed DC voltage generated by the rectifier is fed to the DC bus. This intermediate circuit consists of an inductor and capacitors. The bus filters the pulsed DC current by reducing ripple and provides the required DC power level. But to obtain an AC voltage with the desired characteristics, the DC power received from the bus must be converted to AC power by an inverter using an IGBT as a switching device controlled by the PWM method.

The IGBT combines two transistors: a bipolar transistor that forms a power channel with a positive charge and a field-effect transistor that forms a control channel with a negative pulse at the current output from the inverter. Changing the switching period regulates the voltage and frequency, so that the output alternating current meets the requirements of the motor.

The HIVERT-Y/T unit uses the latest control methods: scalar, vector and direct torque control, for more complete control over the inverter switches while achieving the required variable power, frequency and current amplitude.

Advantages.

The HIVERT-Y/T frequency converter is used to change the power consumption according to the needs of the connected equipment, which saves energy or optimizes power consumption. The energy efficiency of the installation is significantly higher compared to the direct connection mode (DOL), when the motor runs at full speed regardless of the current power requirements. When using the drive, the energy or fuel savings are around 50%.

Even though the HIVERT-Y/T drive controls the frequency and voltage of the current supplied to the motor, it also controls the motor speed, which has the following positive effects:

  • Reduced wear and tear on moving engine components;
  • optimization of the working environment by reducing noise levels;
  • reducing the mechanical load on the equipment and increasing its service life.
