The “heart” of any power plant is its engine. For the continuous operation of the power generator, engines of exceptional reliability with a long service life are required. Such engines use only liquid cooling. While air-cooled generators typically have a maximum engine life of less than 10,000 hours, liquid-cooled engines have a minimum.

• Perkins is a British subsidiary of Caterpillar that manufactures engines for power generators, marine propulsion systems, heavy construction machinery and industrial equipment. For almost 90 years of its existence, the company has become one of the leading European manufacturers of power plants. Perkins’ production facilities are located in Northern Ireland.
• MAN is a German concern known for its trucks and is part of a single holding company with Volkswagen AG. The company was founded back in the 19th century and has its roots in one of the oldest metallurgical plants in Germany. One of the company’s main areas of expertise is the production of engines, including those for power generators. Today, MAN is the market leader in gas engines with a capacity of 50 to 550 kW in Germany. They are widely used for cogeneration units of mini-CHP plants.
• Liebherr is a German group of companies that is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of construction equipment, aircraft components and power plants (130 companies worldwide). In Ukraine, the Liebherr brand is better known as a manufacturer of high-quality household appliances.

All generator sets use products from Leroy-Somer (France) as alternators. With 27 production facilities, the company specializes exclusively in equipment for power generators and power plants.

Electric generators on biogas

The main difference between a biogas and a diesel generator is that biogas is a renewable energy source and a cleaner fuel.

In addition to being environmentally friendly, the use of biogas as a fuel makes agricultural and some processing enterprises energy independent and provides additional economic benefits in the long run by selling surplus electricity to the Ukrainian grid at a green tariff. Rising prices for electricity, natural gas, and diesel fuel make biogas plants more and more attractive every year.

Biogas is produced by processing organic waste, such as manure, food waste, or vegetable waste. This involves a biological decomposition process that produces a gas with a high methane content. After the treatment process, the resulting biogas is used as fuel for an electric generator.

The most profitable use of such installations is in the agricultural sector. In this way, the owner of a farm can ensure almost waste-free production. At the same time, the problem of waste disposal is solved with the generation of electricity and heating through cogeneration.

Biogas power generators based on MAN power plants

The MAN E3262 gas power plant series has become the basis not only for natural gas-fired power generators but also for biogas plants.

The E3262 engines were designed with optimizations for both natural gas and biogas. This gives generator manufacturers more flexibility. Using one platform, it is possible to create a generator for the needs of a specific customer and use it according to the required fuel.

At the same time, the difference in efficiency between natural gas and biogas is at the level of statistical error. Optimized combustion and a cylinder head with 4-valve technology have made it possible to achieve a higher overall efficiency of 93.6%. Thus, the mechanical efficiency is 40.1% in the natural gas version at a frequency of 50 Hz and 40% in the biogas version.

Generators based on MAN engines are also an environmentally friendly alternative to diesel generator sets. With the optional addition of a low-cost oxidizing catalytic converter, they even meet the new, stringent EU MCP Directive.
