The most important criterion when choosing an industrial diesel generator set
When it comes to a 2.5 MW diesel generator set, fuel consumption is not a key criterion for choosing equipment. To understand the appetite of this kind of equipment, it is enough to cite the tank volume of 3500 liters. The most important factor for generators intended for critical infrastructure power supply is the ability to operate for a long time under load and remote control options.
The trouble-free operation of equipment consists of two factors: equipment reliability and maintenance.

For a 2 MW generator used in parallel with the central power grid (backup), it is necessary to provide an automatic start-up system. ATS (automatic transfer switch) will activate the 2000 kW DPS in case of a failure of the main power supply line of the facility. If the equipment is not supposed to be near the personnel on a permanent basis, it is recommended to install a remote monitoring and control system. Such systems allow you to control the startup and shutdown of equipment, operating modes, control fuel consumption, and monitor the technical condition (planning maintenance).
Is it always necessary to use a single powerful 2000 kW SPP?
Let’s model the situation – the power consumption for the facility is 2 MW, but only during the daytime. The consumption schedule is not constant and at night the power consumption is half of the maximum. In this case, it is more rational to use two 1 MW generators, both of which are synchronized and operate during the day. At night, one of them is put on standby. This solution will reduce equipment wear and fuel consumption. A mismatch between the capacity and the actual need will lead to unreasonable costs when purchasing the unit and to problems during its operation. Overestimation of this important parameter will reduce the service life of the station. Underestimation, in turn, is fraught with equipment failure if it operates under a load higher than the maximum permissible.
